In session 3, 2013 Managing Change address three broad key phases of the change management process, which are: 1) Diagnosis; 2) Change intervention and 3) Implementation and institutionalization. Your assessments therefore will reflect these key phases which also mean that the assessment tasks are linked and develop from each other.
You will need to use feedback provided on tasks one and two to ensure that your final assessment task is relevant and appropriate.
The first assessment will require you to draw on Chapters 1 and 2 of the textbook as well as wider reading.This assessment addresses the context of change.
Assessment 1
Qantas has been experiencing change over the last few years in a bid to remain competitive in a highly competitive domestic and international aviation environment. Management’s restructuring decisions have met with active resistance from employees and their representative unions. On October 29 2011, after several months of stop-work action which culminated in significant delays, CEO Alan Joyce announced union employees would be locked out from work without pay and the entire mainline fleet grounded immediately. Qantas reported to the Australian Securities Exchange that the combined cost of industrial actions against the company had cost $194m, comprising $70m from the grounding, $56m through lost customer loyalty and forward bookings and $68m from the union actions in the lead-up to the grounding.
For this assessment:
a. Introduce, define and explain organisational change.
b. Identify the:
o forces driving the change at Qantas (both internal and external);
o the changes Qantas initiated to respond to the driving forces;
o characteristics of the change event/s, ie individual, departmental, or organisation wide; short or long term change; small or large scale change;
c. outline and justify the approach to diagnosis you will use in the next assignment.
N. B. You must include a minimum of six (6) academic citations and references.
The aims of the assignment are to provide you with an opportunity to demonstrate:
• demonstrate how you understand and can explain the application of organisational change to a workplace setting;
• demonstrate how you understand and can explain the nature of organisational change;
• demonstrate your capabilities of engaging with in-depth research on given topics and of writing in a formal, academically appropriate way;
• demonstrate you are engaging with the subject content on a regular basis.
You are expected to follow APA 6 referencing style for citations and references.
The following points are a general guide for presenting all assessment items.
• Assessment items should be typed
• Use 1 ½ line spacing
• Use a 5 cm left margin. Markers need space to be able to include their comments.
• Use Times New Roman or Arial font 12pt
• Left- justify body text
• Include a separate title page with your name, student number, subject code, tutor’s name,
• class time, assessment number and assessment question
• Number your pages (except the cover page)
• Use a header or footer with your name and student number on each page
• Fasten pages securely in the top left-hand corner with a staple. Do not use plastic folders
• Always keep a copy of your assessments.
• Most importantly, always use your spelling and grammar checker, but remember that this does not pick up all errors. You must still edit your work manually and carefully.
