Inpatient Rehabilitation Centers
Inpatient services are the care given to patients who requires admission in hospitals depending with their conditions. However, it is worth noting that there are different inpatient settings under which patients are admitted for intensive care as a responsive to their health conditions. The settings include inpatient rehabilitation, acute inpatient units, skilled nursing, amongst others. Building on the aforesaid, this paper discusses extensively the inpatient rehabilitation setting describing the services provided, important departmental personnel and support it provides or provided from other departments. Most importantly, We will also evaluate and analyze trends involved at inpatient rehabilitation in order to find out the impacts they contribute from a broad point of view.
Inpatient rehabilitation centers are also referred to as rehabilitation hospitals (O’Sullivan, 2007). This is because their main objective is to rehabilitate the patients with various care services. Such care services take account of orthopedic, muscular-skeletal, and neurological; among other health conditions after their acute medical problems are stabilized. The inpatient rehabilitation facilities are mostly set up and operated by independent health care centers within hospitals offering acute care services. This means that, most facilities of inpatient rehabilitation are located and operated within hospitals. In addition, some of them offer their services in a hospital-like structure, although different from facilities of acute inpatient.
As a matter of fact, inpatient rehabilitation centers were initiated in order to meet the prevalent demand for facilities that were perceived to be cheap in offering services as compared to facilities in general hospitals. Other advantageous reasons for inpatient rehabilitation centers were their provision of professional therapies to patients such as physical therapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy (O’Sullivan, 2007). Such services are provided at a higher level in inpatient rehabilitation than they can be obtained in the skilled nursing care facilities.
However, it is important noting that the rehabilitation hospitals are tasked to fulfill the requirements designed by Medicare departments and administration. This includes billing according to the rates formulated for such facilities by Medicare policies. What is more, Medicare only allows a patient to stay in inpatient rehabilitation for a life time of one hundred days (O’Sullivan, 2007). Reflecting on the aforementioned, it is understandable that the inpatient rehabilitation centers only accommodate the patients admitted in a general hospital. In this case, such development makes it important for the two departments to work cohesively.
Therefore, the general hospital department supports the rehabilitation hospital in evaluating and determining the care services needed by the patients in rehabilitation facilities. If the general hospital makes a positive determination on taking the patient to inpatient rehabilitation, it is apparent that she or he will benefit with certain therapies as recommended by physicians. The patient is admitted in rehabilitation hospital after scrutinizing his or her medical reports transmitted from the general hospital. On the other hand, the rehabilitation center supports other departments in offering various services to patients as recommended by doctors for them to be discharged (O’Sullivan, 2007). Inpatient rehabilitation comprises physicians as staff who offer services to patients as required for the have a healthy condition.
We will also identify two trends that have contributed to a greater impact on inpatient rehabilitation. Such trends take account of patient care and high cost. The patients admitted at inpatient rehabilitation hospitals are the ones that had a recent or remaining impairment after a severe sickness or sustain injuries due to medical condition. Such impairments affect the patients physically or socially in their ability to earn a living. The physically impaired person is dangerous to the society and needs support for their daily activities. Therefore, the inpatient rehabilitation hospitals need to offer higher medical assistances, additional therapies and increase nursing care services that lacks in many centers due to fewer staffing. Many inpatient rehabilitation hospitals also lack accessible gym services, dining services and others that are available in some centers. Lack of such services slows down the healing process the patients as they discourage them from getting necessary support that streamline the activities to do after discharge (O’Sullivan, 2007).
One of mistake done by some rehabilitation staffs is lack of being empathetic in providing care services to a patient. Although there are other mistakes done by the same personnel, it is recorded that the above mistake has negative outcome. Based on such mistake, it is true many professionals regard empathy as the most human response to sorrow and pain. In the inpatient rehabilitation hospital, lack of empathy degrades the quality of patient care services provided and in that case interfering with the overall services provided (O’Sullivan, 2007). Therefore, good characteristic of patient care provided in inpatient rehabilitation has greater impact in discharging the patient, helps the patient recover faster and understand the problems transparently.
The other trend that impacts the inpatient rehabilitation is the high cost for medication. Most of the inpatient rehabilitation centers use Medicare insurance cover that pays a certain percentage to the bill, making it un-affordable to the disadvantaged persons. The high costs also determine the length of duration that patients stay in the inpatient rehabilitation that decreases every year (O’Sullivan, 2007). The health staff also quit their jobs due to poor wages as compared to the increasing working hours. In addition, political issues affect the costs involved in many inpatient rehabilitation hospitals.
Cost and patient care have various impacts on inpatient rehabilitation. For instance, they contribute to positive and negative impacts on inpatient rehabilitation. This is because providing poor medication or treatment causes negative impact on patient care, where patients request early discharge before they complete their treatment because of unaffordable costs. The high costs and poor patient care trends in the inpatient rehabilitation setting results to the reduced staff, decrease stay duration of a patient, loss patients, and reduced staffs (O’Sullivan, 2007).
In conclusion, inpatient rehabilitation setting is the place where patients have to live for those with impairment associated with stroke, brain, among others. As a health administrator, the impacts contributed by trends in the inpatient rehabilitation settings, either negative or positive, must not bar patients from receiving treatment. The patients should be treated in the right way and be discharged after they fully recover. The costs are their big problem but needs assistance and treatment since inpatient rehabilitation is the best place for them. Based on the discussion, We can deduce that health care is very important for the development of any given society. In that sense, this explains why different departments and agencies have been held in close investigations towards offering improved health care policy, which meet different health issues accordingly.
