Countdown to Fiction

Overview

This performance task will give you the opportunity to apply your knowledge of the themes, characters and content studied this year. This task is designed to allow you to: enrich your vocabulary; practice developing stylistic/literary devices that suit your style of writing; continue to develop the skills associated with effective writing and critical thinking.

Understanding the vast uses and abuses of the English language can best be achieved through the manipulation and application of diction.  Writing is used in every part of our day-to-day lives and being able to communicate in an effective and thoughtful manner is imperative in today’s society.

This performance task will enable you to create a course-related story in a lean and interesting manner that still requires all aspects of the writing process as well as the creative process.  Besides honing your writing skills, editing skills, and word economy, you will be developing the art of short, clear narrative writing which will further enrich your ability to communicate effectively.

Themes

The themes you may choose to write about are:

  • Anti-heroism
  • Heroism
  • Villainy
  • Revenge
  • Rebellion
  • Victimization
  • Faithful friend
  • Mentor
  • Betrayal
  • Good versus Evil
  • Deception
  • Integrity
  • A theme you thought of and okayed by me

All five stories must highlight a different theme from this list and connect in some manner with the literature we have studied so far.  The link to the theme may provide this connection, as will your focus on characters and plot. Be creative and think beyond the text!
